When Start.ca hired me, we learned the six words that we live by as a company. They are:

  • Friendly
  • Forward
  • Honest
  • Reliable
  • Smart
  • Involved

I never knew how involved Start.ca was in the community, but I would soon find out!

To understand my perspective about Start.ca, I want to give you little background on myself. I am an American and I moved to London with my wife who is now finishing her degree at Western University. I am from Columbus, Ohio and have lived in Raleigh, North Carolina and Daegu, South Korea, so I have lived in other mid-sized cities that have proud communities. Londoners not only love supporting businesses and their community, there’s also a unique sense of pride in the city and within the different communities it houses.

As for what I do for Start.ca, I am a Residential Sales Representative for our Corporate Solutions team. In non-corporate speak, I sell fibre internet to people in the communities of London. I go out into each of the buildings and neighborhoods that we have invested in to talk to the residents about Start.ca and fibre internet, and the give them the opportunity to make their homes fibre-ready. We started installing residential fibre in three neighborhoods this past year: Piccadilly/Woodfield, Hamilton Rd/Rectory and Old East Village. It is a pretty cool job and I get to talk to people face-to-face (pre-COVID) about our company and how much it means that Start is part of the London community.

Supporting the Community

Start.ca is involved in tons of local events and organizations. We sponsor our local sports teams: the London Knights and London Lightning and have the Start.ca Performance Stage at Bud Gardens. We participate in the Pride Parade and London Home Show and we support Children’s Health Foundation, Humane Society London & Middlesex, and the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority. Start.ca even had the opportunity to sponsor the JUNO Awards when they came to London last year! Our crown jewel is the ‘Start.ca Rocks the Park’ concert series that invites artists from around the world, including Mr. Worldwide himself, Pitbull. When I go around London and say, “I’m from Start.ca”, I get a lot of, “Oh Start.ca! You guys do (insert event here) in London! I know you guys!”

For my job, I answer calls from people who are interested in fibre internet as well as going door-to-door. One of the calls I have received was from a young woman who was going to choose us for the sole reason that Start.ca sponsors Comic Con. She appreciated our support for her favorite event and wanted to give us her business.

While going door-to-door, I met a parent whose son’s soccer team was sponsored by Start. I have met people who have seen our banners at Knights and Lightning games and have talked to residents who saw us at the Pride Parade and the Air Show. They could not praise Start.ca enough for being involved in the community. They appreciated that we are a London-based company, with London-based customer service and a physical office on York Street that they could go to anytime.

Involved at Start.ca

At Start.ca, we are passionate about what our customers are passionate about and that is London, Ontario. We want to make London a better place to live by sponsoring organizations and events that are important to the people of London and by giving back to the community that has given us so much. When I was hired, my trainers told me that we are involved in our community and that I would get a front row seat. Talking to people while out in London has given me not only a confidence in how much our company is involved in the city of London, but also how much it means to the London community.
